Medicine, nursing
We are delighted to offer our Ophthalmology elective at the Instituto Regional de Ophthalmologia. The institute is the most important Ophthalmology center in Northern Peru. IRO covers all areas of Ophthalmology including cataracts, strabismus, plastic surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma, and pediatric ophthalmology. The center also receives patients suffering from eye complications from AIDS.
The center has around 100 staff including 14 specialists and 12 interns. More than 67,000 patients are attended to each year. Patients with complex cases are referred here from across Northern Peru. As a state-run institute, most of the patients have very limited resources.
The institute only moved to their new 5-floor building in early 2012. They are a partner organization of Orbis International who has provided them with a great deal of training and equipment in recent years, enabling the institute to offer the high-quality services it today provides.
For Whom
IRO is the elective for students interested in a career in ophthalmology. Although this is a busy regional center, medics and intern here are happy to work with overseas students and assist as much as possible.
