No prior Spanish is required. We teach Medical Spanish at all levels, from beginner to advanced, with a focus on clinical communication with patients. Residents quickly build confidence through daily teaching and real-world practice.

Approval depends on the individual residency program, but many programs accept international electives when structured learning objectives and supervision are provided.
What is the typical duration of a residency rotation in Peru?
Most residents attend for 2–4 weeks, although shorter and longer stays can be arranged depending on scheduling and availability.
Do residents combine clinical rotations with Medical Spanish training?
No. Some take the combined program. Others want to focus 100% on medical Spanish. Those residents take 7 hours of our medical Spanish course each day. On Friday mornings, they still see patients at our weekly community health fairs
Do residents need malpractice or liability insurance?
In most cases, residents are covered through their home institution’s existing malpractice or liability insurance, which may extend to elective placements.
Residents do not work independently and all activities are supervised by local physicians.
Hospitals and community health activities we work with do not typically require separate individual malpractice insurance. We recommend confirming any requirements with your residency program.
How do residency programs arrange affiliation agreements for electives in Peru?
We support residency programs with documentation and guidance where needed. While formal affiliation agreements are not always required, we work with program coordinators to ensure all requirements are met.
What happens after completing a medical elective in Peru?
Participants receive documentation of completion, and continued access to our online Medical Spanish CME course for 12 months, supporting long-term learning.
