Medical Spanish for healthcare professionals

Work effectively with Spanish speaking patients

Each month we receive professionals taking medical Spanish immersion programs and/or clinical rotations  Professionals with varying levels of experience choose us to help develop their medical Spanish skills, to experience healthcare in Peru and to enjoy the beauty and culture of the country.

As well as residents from the US and beyond, we receive experienced attending physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners.

Most of the professionals we see are already working with Spanish speaking patients, and now want to develop their Spanish language skills further.  Our CME accredited immersion programs in Peru are the ideal way for professionals to develop these skills quickly and have a great experience.

The focus of our program is to help participants develop the language skills required to work with Spanish speaking patients effectively.  Before you arrive, we will send you learning materials.  Once here your immersion begins with family homestay accommodation.  The classroom program is intensive and is where you will quickly advance.  Beyond the classroom, you will practice these language skills on our community health fairs, and/or a hospital rotation.

Medical Spanish Programs

You can choose to take your language program for either 4 hours or 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday.  Programs are taught at all levels by our team of doctors and language teachers.

The 4-hour program takes place each afternoon 2.30pm to 6.30pm and covers conversation, Spanish grammar, and medical Spanish.  Many participants, looking to advance as quickly as possible, chose to take our intensive program, with an additional 3 hours of classes each morning.

Accommodation

As an immersion program, participant accommodation is with local families.   We understand that professionals need quality accommodation, offering comfort and security.  We work with middle-class families, all located within 10 minutes’ walk of our school.  Participants stay in private rooms, most with private bathrooms.

Activities

For program participants, we arrange either gym membership or salsa classes at a local dance school.  Within our language program, we also organize weekly activities.  The activity may be a meal, preparing pisco sour or bringing in a dance teacher to the school.

Community health fairs

Most students participate in our weekly community health fairs.  Here you will work with our doctors providing free medicine and consultations to underserved communities around the city.  Aside from being a rewarding opportunity to use your professional skills, health fairs are also an excellent opportunity to measure your progress in communicating with Spanish speaking patients.

Hospital rotations

Most medical student participants and many professionals choose to also take hospital electives with us.  We work with several hospitals in Trujillo, covering most specialties.  As well as practicing Spanish language skills, this is the ideal opportunity to learn about the healthcare system and experience healthcare provision with fewer resources
