What participants say

The Medical Electives program was everything I could have hoped. Since returning to the U.S.A., I now feel comfortable talking to my Spanish-speaking patients without an interpreter

It is so rewarding to see your Spanish improve and to be able to get an insight into the Peruvian healthcare system

My teachers were absolutely phenomenal.  and did a great job of catering the Spanish classes to an appropriate level for me so that I felt challenged every day but not overwhelmed.

What You’ll Learn

You’ll develop the skills needed to communicate confidently with Spanish-speaking patients in real clinical settings.

You will learn how to:

  • Take a full clinical history in Spanish
  • Understand and respond to patient symptoms and concerns
  • Use appropriate physical examination language
  • Explain diagnoses and treatments clearly
  • Conduct real patient-style consultations

All teaching is adapted to your level — from beginner to advanced — with a consistent focus on practical, real-world communication.

👉 By the end of the program, you will not just understand medical Spanish — you will be able to use it with patients.

This same approach is used in our residency programs, where participants combine medical Spanish with clinical experience.

Medical Spanish Immersion: Common Questions

Medical Spanish immersion is the quickest way to develop language skills, helping healthcare professionals use Spanish in real-life situations rather than just studying vocabulary in isolation. Our program in Peru combines structured medical Spanish classes with daily conversation practice, cultural learning, homestay interaction, and community health activities. Online courses can be useful preparation, but immersion gives learners more confidence with listening, speaking, and patient-style communication.

Our Medical Spanish Immersion program is designed for healthcare professionals and students who want to improve their ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. Participants include physicians, residents, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, medical students and other health professionals. The course is especially useful for people who already work with Spanish-speaking patients or expect to do so in the future.

Yes. You do not need to have experience in Spanish before joining the program. We adapt the Medical Spanish Immersion course to your level, and our small-group format allows teachers to give more individual support. Before arrival, participants receive learning materials and online resources to help them prepare. After the program, they also receive access to continued online CME-accredited medical Spanish resources, so they can keep building vocabulary, listening confidence, and patient communication skills after returning home.

Participants can choose between a standard 4-hour-per-day Medical Spanish Immersion program or a more intensive 7-hour-per-day option. The 4-hour program is a good choice for those who want structured medical Spanish classes with time for self-study, cultural activities or rest. The 7-hour option is designed for participants who want faster progress and a deeper immersion experience, with more time for conversation practice, clinical vocabulary, grammar support, and patient-style communication.

The course focuses on practical medical Spanish for real healthcare communication. Topics, taught by physicians,  may include taking a medical history, asking about pain, explaining symptoms, discussing medications, giving instructions, and using vocabulary for common specialties such as family medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, and women’s health. Classes taught by language teachers include general Spanish, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation practice.

Medical Spanish Immersion participants usually take part in our weekly community health activities, where they can practice Spanish in a supervised and culturally relevant setting. Students or professionals who want a hospital or clinic rotation should choose the combined medical Spanish and clinical rotation option.

Yes, eligible healthcare professionals can receive AAFP-accredited CME credit for the Medical Spanish Immersion program. The course is designed for healthcare communication and cultural understanding, with a focus on improving care for Spanish-speaking patients. Participants also receive access to AAFP CME-accredited online medical Spanish resources to support continued learning after the immersion experience.

The program fee includes medical Spanish classes, homestay accommodation with meals, local support, program coordination, community health activities where scheduled, gym membership, travel insurance, learning materials, and access to online resources.

Yes, one-week programs are available, although two or more weeks are recommended when possible. A one-week Medical Spanish Immersion course can be a useful introduction or refresher, especially for healthcare professionals with limited time. Longer programs give more time to build fluency, confidence and practical communication skills.

At the end of your course with us, we cannot promise that you will be fluent in Spanish.  However, you will not find a better immersion course to  give you the confidence to work in Spanish in a health care environment.
