Physician Assistant Rotations

PA rotations abroad with medical Spanish immersion

Clinical Rotations

Physician Assistant rotations occur at different hospitals in Trujillo, offering different clinical experiences.  For example, Emergency Medicine at the Regional Teaching Hospital or Family Medicine at a community hospital.  You could consider our primary care rotation for those interested in a broader experience.

Regardless of your chosen area of medicine, you will be working under supervision and experiencing health care abroad.

Most rotations occur from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, followed by the medical Spanish program from 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.  However, some rotations, including Emergency Medicine, may also involve the occasional night shift or afternoon.  In these cases, you can join the morning language program the following day.

Students can spend more clinical time on weekends or during the week.

Medical Spanish for Physician Assistants

The medical Spanish immersion program in Trujillo takes place each afternoon.  Beginner-level medical Spanish students also have the option of taking an additional 2 hours in the morning at the beginning of their program to speed up their language development.

The team of language teachers provides courses at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.  Local physicians teach the pure medical Spanish part of the language program.

Each program level is four weeks, ideal for many student PA rotation periods.  We do, however, welcome students for longer or shorter periods.

Accredited program for professionals

Most professional PAs coming to Trujillo choose to take our Intensive Medical Spanish program.

Professional Physician Assistants can benefit from up to 82 CME credits the American Academy of Family Physicians has accredited with the program.

For professionals with limited time, we also offer one and two-week programs.  The credits awarded are determined by the number of program hours completed.

Please take a look at our testimonial page, where we have included several PA testimonials.

Community Health Fairs

The community health fairs we organize each week are excellent opportunities for physical assistants who wish to practice both their clinical skills and develop their Spanish skills.  Typically, program participant groups will see 40 – 60 patients with various ailments.

As you can imagine, this is more direct exposure to patients than you may see on a typical hospital rotation day.  You will be accompanied by local health professionals and may be seeing patients in a public square or even a local prison.
