Orphanage

We support the orphanage “La Divina Providencia” in Trujillo.  Here, Sister Lucia and her small team take care of around 50 children from a variety of backgrounds.  

The sisters working at the orphanage do a wonderful job taking care of the children and preparing them for the world.  The older children attend a good school locally where they all receive scholarships.  These scholarships are dependent on the children maintaining good grades.

The orphanage is run without state financial support and is dependent on donations and the goodwill of those taking care of the children.  Sister Lucia is very creative in managing resources; for example paying for teachers with a meal.  However, lack of money does limit what can be done for the children.  For example, new clothes for each child can only be bought just once a year.

If you decide to take your elective with us in Trujillo you are welcome to visit the orphanage and see the wonderful work taking place.   There may also be the opportunity to spend some time volunteering there.

If you wish to make a donation it will be gratefully received.  They would particularly welcome:

• New or good quality used children’s clothing, particularly for girls
• Education materials such as pens and pencils
• Hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby shampoo and vitamins
• Diapers and formula milk (These can be bought locally and taken by you to the orphanage)
